CHAPTER 15

Heather was standing by Jake’s Jeep when he came outside. She kept the conversation focused on the case in an attempt to keep the old Jake who didn’t trust her from reemerging. “I guess our next step is to speak with Winston about Gwen driving the car when his sister died.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Jake said. “And don’t forget about Katrina. It’s nearing dinnertime, so now is probably not the best time to catch either of them. But by 8:00, the restaurant is usually empty. I’ll come back tonight, and with any luck, we can speak with both of them after the dinner rush.”

“Great. I’ll meet you in the foyer at 8:00.”

Jake dropped Heather off in front of the inn and drove away.

Since it was only 4:00, and there would still be sunlight for another hour or so, she decided to walk the beach. She slipped on her hat and gloves, which were inside her coat pockets, and headed to the beach across the street. When she arrived, the sun was peeking out from behind white clouds, illuminating them with a golden hue. She inhaled the clean air and trudged toward the ocean through the heavy sand. She spotted another sand dollar, and slipped it into her pocket to add to the one she had collected on Saturday.

When her cheeks grew numb from the cold, Heather turned around. As she was walking toward the beach access path, she heard a scratching sound coming from Sydney’s cottage. She laughed when she determined its source. It was Sydney’s little puppy scratching on the slider to get her attention.

Sydney scooped him up, and when she realized that Heather was there, she opened the slider.

“If you don’t come in for a few minutes, this little guy is going to scratch up the glass.”

Heather chuckled and headed toward Sydney’s back deck. She scratched the dog behind his ears and kissed the top of his head. “I think this little guy is my biggest fan in Sand Dune Shores.”

Sydney paused and looked at Heather. “Are you okay? You seem downcast.”

Heather opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

“That bad, huh?”

Heather sat down, and before she could decide whether she wanted to tell Sydney about her conversation with Detective Blaney, she found herself blurting out the whole story. The puppy jumped onto Heather’s lap and snuggled in as she told Sydney about their trip to Gwen’s house, the flashback of herself painting, and the painting she had done back in her room. Then she told her new friend about her encounter with Detective Blaney and how he told her that John Seewald had been convicted of armed robbery while committing art theft.

“Don’t let Rick Blaney get to you,” Sydney said. “My younger brother went to school with him, and he thinks he’s a lot slicker than he really is.”

Heather had to laugh at Sydney’s attempt to cheer her up. “I can’t help but wonder if his suspicion of me could be valid. I’m an artist.
